What Kiteboarding and Wing Foiling Gear Should I Buy After Lessons?

Finished your lessons and ready to ride on your own? Here’s what you’ll need, and how to avoid buying the wrong gear.

Start With the Right Questions

The right kite or wing size depends on your weight, your skill level, and the wind where you’ll ride most. A setup that works for one rider can be too much, or too little, for another. Before you buy, talk to your instructor. We’ve watched you ride, so we can point you to gear that fits where you are now and where you’re headed.

What You Need to Kiteboard

• Kite: an inflatable (LEI) kite sized for your weight and local wind.
• Bar and lines: how you steer the kite, including the safety release systems you learned in your lessons.
• Board: most new riders start on a twintip.
• Harness: connects you to the bar so your body takes the pull, not your arms.
• Pump, leash, and wetsuit: plus a helmet and impact vest for extra protection.

What You Need to Wing Foil

• Wing: an inflatable wing sized for your weight and local wind, with a wrist leash.
• Board: new wingers usually start on a bigger, more stable board.
• Hydrofoil: the mast, fuselage, and wings that lift the board out of the water.
• Board leash, pump, and wetsuit: plus a helmet and impact vest for extra protection.
